About a week after the closure of six radio stations in Canada, and there are mounting questions, comments and concerns about why talk radio and specifically news radio isn’t making a roaring comeback. Why aren’t companies relicensing frequencies and just restarting new news stations?
Why isn’t it that simple?
Well, in this episode, Erin breaks down the break down in the sales model – pullling it right back to the macro economics of media.
The suggestion is there’s a fundamental flaw in how media dollars in Canada are being funnelled to the States – despite intentions to keep the money in local markets.
Then it’s compounded by the major telecom-media companies shifting their sales catalogues to include digital sales over over-the-air conventional radio sales. Essentially the reason we don’t see news talk and newsrooms sprouting up the way we once did is because the economics of the ad environment no longer support the scope.
